A school calendar is not a neutral tool. We usually inherit the structure from the dominant educational system and simply adapt it to our needs. In doing so, we unintentionally bring into our schools a value system of the dominant culture that may not necessarily be aligned with Islamic values.

Many attempts to “Islamize” schooling focus on adding Islamic symbols, terminology, or occasional celebrations. While these efforts have value, they often leave the deeper structures of schooling untouched.

The calendar is one of those deeper structures.

A school calendar communicates what a community values. It shapes how students experience time, anticipate important events, and organize their lives.

Integrating the Hijri calendar invites students to experience time through an Islamic lens. It creates opportunities to discuss sacred months, significant historical events, the lunar cycle, moon sighting, and the connection between worship and time. It reminds students that Islam is not confined to a subject period in the timetable but provides a framework for organizing life itself. This reflects the broader educational goal of nurturing a coherent Islamic identity rather than treating faith as an isolated component of schooling.

As educators in Islamic schools, it is important for us to pay careful attention to developing the school calendar. We must critically assess the constraints of operating within an educational system that may not align with the Islamic worldview and identify those elements in the school calendar that can be negotiated to be replaced with the Hijri calendar.

For this reason, I am pleased to share the 1448–1449 Hijri Calendar Template for the 2026–2027 School Year.
